In a fascinating example of genetics at work, a black couple in South London gave birth to a baby girl who bears little resemblance to them. The peculiarity of the fair-skinned newborn with fair complexity has genetic biologists puzzled. The new baby’s differences from the parents’ other kids and from themselves shocked the parents.
There are no relatives of the couple who have light complexion or are of mixed races who may shed light on the pregnancy. The event surprises the couple, even though they are aware that the child is theirs. In fact, when I first saw it, I questioned, “What is this?” Doctors say the young child is not an albino.
Professor, director of human genetics at the University of Oxford, claims that the genetics of his birth are exceptional. Since the occurrence cannot be explained by white heritage, it is probably the outcome of an undiagnosed illness.
