The mother was immobile due to the extreme cold of the winter and the snow-covered nest. While female eagles spend 80% of their time sitting on eggs, male eagles are in charge of feeding, gathering fish, and small animals.
The eagles are unable to leave their nest by themselves once they have laid their eggs. The mother eagle would perch on her eggs to protect them from the elements during a snowstorm, hailstorm, or neck-deep snowfall. When the eagle was completely covered in snow, she fluffed her feathers and broke the chains.
She used her beak and huge claws to flip the eggs before going back to the nest. The chicks were expected in a week, so she had to wait a bit longer for her watch to run out. The first three months of a chick’s life are spent in the nest while it is being fed by its parents. They will then require flying instruction.
