Nigrita, an 80-year-old tortoise, is housed in the Zurich Zoo in Switzerland. She gave birth to 9 eggs more than 8 months ago.
This may come as a surprise to some, but it is quite common for turtles of this species. With a lifetime of over 100 years, giant tortoises are regarded one of the world’s longest-living animals. The turtle who lived the longest was 152 years old. This is incredible. Turtles may live for up to a year without food or water, according to National Geographic, since they have a sluggish metabolism and enormous internal water stores.
Turtles may sleep for up to 16 hours a day, sunbathe, and consume grass, leaves, and other plant matter. Regrettably, these magnificent animals are on the endangered species list. Pirates, whalers, and commerce ships pursued them for a long time. Their flesh is valued as food, and they make jewelry and furniture out of the shells. Nigrita and her nine offspring are housed at the Zurich Zoo as part of a breeding program aimed at preventing the extinction of the species.
These incredible animals have a possibility of living until the year 2216. That is more than any other animal on the earth! Living a large, leisurely, and tranquil life is a remarkable achievement.
