In a TikTok video that she later deleted, teacher Kristin Pitzen of Orange County’s Newport Mesa School District explained why she removed the American flag from her classroom: “because it made me uncomfortable.”

“I packed it away and I don’t know where, and I haven’t found it yet,” she muttered into the camera, her laughter pouring over her words.

She went on to claim that she urges her kids to “stand if you feel like it, don’t stand if you feel like it, say the words if you want, you don’t have to say the words” during the morning reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, which is a sign of national patriotism.

However, this caused an issue because the teacher’s classroom lacked a US flag, which she removed during the pandemic because it made her “feel uncomfortable,” Pitzen said in the video.

Pitzen proceeded. “But my kid today says, ‘Hey, um, it’s kinda weird that we just stand there and then, you know, say nothing.'” And I said, ‘Oh well, you know, I gotta find it, like, I’m working on it, I got you.'”
