A woman walked into a rarely used spare room at her mother’s house and was astonished to find 5,000 wasps nesting in the bed.
The nest, which measured 3 feet broad by 1.5 feet deep, was still spreading, and the insects had chewed through the mattress and pillows to construct it.
When pest controller John Birkett arrived at the scene, he discovered that it had been developing for months. His customer, who lives alone in a five-bedroom property in Winchester, Hampshire, had not used the spare bedroom in months. When her son opened the door and found the nest in the single bed, he noticed a window had been left open the entire time.
Birkett of Longwood Services reported receiving a call for a bedroom, which was rare for them. I opened the door, and I couldn’t believe it. The cushion was encased in a 3ft wasps’ nest, and the workers were still diligently building it.
“In 45 years, I’ve never seen anything like this. There must have been 5,000 wasps. It’s incredible that the woman wasn’t aware she was living with them.
