When we think of a pigeon, we think of a common bird that can be found practically anywhere on the planet. The Victoria crowned pigeon, on the other hand, is not just any pigeon; it is a beautiful bird that is rather huge.
Bright blue feathers and a tufted head characterize this pigeon species.
Furthermore, these pigeons are huge, with some reaching the size of a typical turkey. A crowned pigeon weighs around 5.5 lb and has a body length of 29 to 30 in.
This species is found mostly in northern New Guinea and surrounding islands.
The crowned pigeon is mostly a land bird that looks like a pheasant, but it will fly up to the lower limbs of trees and flail its wings noisily if it senses even a minor threat. Birds consume fallen fruits, seeds, and berries because they reside primarily on the ground, and they occasionally eat snails and tiny invertebrates.
These pigeons normally live in couples and lay one, or occasionally two, eggs.
Crowned pigeons lay eggs one by one. The female spends most of her time on the nest at night, while the male spends most of his time on it during the day. Male pigeons have an unusual technique of looking after ladies. Drumming, cooing, bowing to their mistress, and lowering their tail to the ground are some of the noises they produce.
Sadly, the population of crowned pigeons is fast dwindling.
As is always the case, the causes are simple: human-caused bird loss and habitat damage. They are fearless among humans. Poachers know how to take advantage of this. That’s how the extinction begins.
